The volume explores the concept of praise in its broadest sense—both as an autonomous rhetorical form and as an element of a larger artistic whole. It examines various types of artistic expression that incorporate elements of praise, including ironic, ambiguous, or opportunistic forms such as flattery. The individual articles analyze its historically shifting subjects, strategies, themes, functions, goals, conditions, and limitations, focusing on the "mortality" or "immortality" of motifs and figures used for laudation and their dependence on cultural contexts. The extensive chronological scope of the texts discussed enables a panoramic, comparative perspective on praise in literature across different eras and cultures.
