Barłowski’s dissertation presents a new face of the author of Myśli nowoczesnego Polaka. Roman Dmowski – the doyen of Polish integral nationalism, the icon of the modern traditionalism of the Rzeczpospolita – is here a subject with a heterogeneous identity. The ideologue turns out to be an artist with leftist and egalitarian roots, a politician growing out of democratic and progressive doctrines and an intellectual with a source humanist sensibility. The presentation of ideological transformations and ideological contradictions revealed in Dmowski’s mature prose works forms the basis for the analysis of the title issues of this dissertation.
