Artur Grabowski's book "Forefathers and Offsprings", containing his critical texts on theatre previously published on the website teatrologia.info, is much more than just an ordinary collection of sketches devoted to performances presented in Kraków theatres during the last few seasons. Of course, this set of articles is also an excellent chronicle of the theatre life of Kraków and Poland, but its importance is primarily determined by the way in which Grabowski writes about theatre. For a literary scholar, a renowned playwright, poet and prose writer - discussing individual performances is an opportunity to also write something important about our contemporary culture, the state of civilisation or the social situation. One of the greatest advantages of this book is the language - one can feel Grabowski's original literary talent in it - his texts sparkle with paradoxes and wordplay, they are superbly composed, the openings and endings are never accidental, the reader does not lose the impression for a moment that the author maintains excellent control over the form. As a result, his essays, because that is how the form of these texts should be classified, are simply a piece of good literature. This is undoubtedly a distinct voice in contemporary theatre writing.
