The eighth volume of Dzieła literackie (Literary works) comprises five dramas which date back to writer’s early work from years 1897 to 1903: Dla szczęścia (German edition: Die Gesellschaft 1897, Polish edition: Lviv 1900; For Happiness), Złote runo (Lviv 1901; The Golden Fleece), Goście (Lviv 1901; Visitors), Matka (Lviv 1903; Mother) and Śnieg (Warsaw 1903; Snow). The layout of this volume takes into account the author’s wish concerning the first four works, which are treated as conceptually and aesthetically related. In the Polish edition, the dramas Złote runo and Goście were included in the cycle titled Taniec miłości i śmierci (Lviv 1901; The Dance of Love and Death). The German edition (Berlin 1902) under a common title Totentanz der Liebe (The Dance of Love and Death) comprised four dramas: Das grosse Glück (Dla szczęścia), Das goldene Vlies (Złote runo), Die Gäste (Goście) and Die Mutter (Matka). The drama Śnieg, even though it wasn’t included in this cycle, is “genetically” affiliated with it and it is a symbolic work.
