The aim of this book is to reconstruct the linguistic picture of woman and man. The subject of the analysis constitutes 756 emotionally marked appellative nouns used to describe women and men by both the middle and the oldest generation of inhabitants of the parish of Zakliczyn on the Dunajec (district of Tarnów, dialect of Malopolska). The collected vocabulary has been divided into four semantic fields, which enables a holistic view of woman and man (as an aesthetic object, a member of a village community, a family member, as well as a spiritual and sexual being.) The analysis of the linguistic material reveals a stereotypical image of the sexes. Home and family are recognized as an area of woman's activity, whereas social activity is viewed as fulfillment of man's role. Woman is given higher ethical requirements, due to the ascribed role of a mother. As for the appellations attributed to man, the emphasis is put on his ability to work, which is associated with his role as breadwinner. Behaviours and social roles which are not ingrained in the folk culture, such as woman's pursuit of professional career, or man's care of his appearance, are negatively judged. The attitude of the village inhabitants towards behaviours traditionally perceived as unwelcome, for example, concubinage, domination of a man by a woman, spinsterhood, alcoholism, is not subject to liberalization.
